BIONIC HANDS – 2004: Saebo presents SaeboFlex!

In 2004 Saebo presented their version of the bionic hand, a medical hand-device named the ‘SaeboFlex’. The ‘SaeboStretch’, ‘SaeboFlex’ and ‘Saeboxreach’ were developed in cooperation with CHMG Capital LLC, a Charlotte based provider of home health care that serves many stroke patients.

Interestingly, the founders of Saebo are Star Trek fans. The Saebo motto – “No Plateau in Sight” – refers to the idea that Saebo products help stroke patients continually improve their ability to work their hands and arms. One of the founders explained the logo of interlocking chevrons to The Charlotte Observer:

“We’re Star Trek fans,” Hoffman said, alluding to the insignia worn by Captain Kirk and Mister Spock. He was joking.

In 2004 Saebo already reported to have sold more than 1000 ‘SaeboFlex’ devices. In 2006 Saebo introduced the ‘SaeboStretch’ for national distribution, while the network then had grown to over 1,800 Saebo-trained occupational & physical therapists in the USA. And the ‘SaeboReach’ has become the newest upper extremity product in the Saebo family.

Since then the Saebo Program has been offered as a treatment option at over 2,000 clinics and hospitals in the US, including 22 of the “Top 25 Rehabilitation Hospitals” as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Saebo has also expanded their basis to e.g. Greece and Germany. And in 2008 the Saebo Program was named ‘Most Valuable Product’ by Therapy Times.

BIONIC HANDS – 1999: Matthew Scott got the first hand transplant!

On january 24, 1999 Matthew Scott became the first man who received successful hand transplant. In 2009 Matthew was able to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his hand transplant. It was performed in Kentucky by a team of doctors from Jewish Hospital, the University of Louisville and Kleinert Kutz & Associates.

Mr. Scott lost his dominant left hand on December 23, 1985 in a blast from an M80 firecracker.

He is now independent in his activities of daily living, although admits that he had to relearn everything necessary with a prosthetic device to achieve independence. Before the hand transplant, Mr. Scott was using an Otto Bach myoelectric prosthetic device.

BIONIC HANDS – Motion Control developed:
the ‘Utah Arm’!

Motion Control, Inc., is the leading U.S. manufacturer of myoelectric and externally powered prosthetic arm systems. In 1981 they presented the ‘Utah Arm’ – this was the premier myoelectric arm for above elbow amputees, which became one of the first commercially available examples of a bionic hand.

Since then they haved presented in 1987 and 2004 revised versions:

In 1987 the Utah Arm 2 (U2) was released with entirely re-engineered electronics that made the Utah Arm the most durable and dependable myoelectric arm available for a long time.

In 2004 they presented the Utah Arm 3 (U3), including microprocessor technology with a Computer Interface that allows the prosthetist or wearer to fine-tune the adjustments to achieve maximum performance.

BIONIC HANDS – From Luke Skywalker (Star Wars) to the first prosthetic hand!

What appeared to be science fiction in 1980 when Luke Skywalker’s “prosthetic hand” was introduced in Star Wars episode V (‘The Empire strikes Back’), has in the 21th century definitely become reality. For, in 2008 Time Magazine included the ‘bionic hand’ in the list of best inventions!

The article presents an overview of the milestones in the developments of various ‘bionic hands’ – what could become the ‘NEXT NATURE’ version of the human hand! A review of how disabled people in time were able to become a ‘bionic man’ or ‘bionic woman’!

Raphael, the air-powered robotic hand.

The new ‘bionic hand‘ was created by the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory of the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, and was named: ‘RAPHaEL’ – Robotic Air Powered Hand with Elastic Ligaments. The students who designed the man-killing machinery will be splitting a $10,500 prize for winning first place in an innovative-design competition sponsored by the Cleveland-based Compressed Air and Gas Institute.

The new ‘bionic’ robotic hand that can firmly hold objects as heavy as a can of food or as delicate as a raw egg, while dexterous enough to make hand gestures for sign language.

RAPHaEL is just part of a larger RoMeLa project: The humanoid robot known as CHARLI (Cognitive Humanoid Robot with Learning Intelligence). The hand already is on its second prototype design, with the newer model to be used by CHARLI. Once the newer model hand is connected to the larger body, it will be able to pick up – not just grasp and hold – objects as would a person.

Professor Dennis Hong (Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engeneering) says:

“This air-powered design is what makes the hand unique, as it does not require the use of any motors or other actuators, the grasping force and compliance can be easily adjusted by simply changing the air pressure.”
