Just to avoid misunderstandings, I will briefly describe each of the hand lines in the picture above:

Line 1 = extra crease on the 1st phalange (beyond the distal interphalangeal crease)
Line 2 = extra crease on the 2nd phalange (in 1 or more fingers)
Line 3 = single crease on the pinky finger
Line 4 = extra crease on the thumb
Line 5 = ‘hockey-stick crease’
Line 6 = simian crease
Line 7 = Sydney crease
Line 8 = transverse hypothenar crease
Line 9 = secondary creases: unusually high density

A = Alagille syndrome (= genetic disorder related to e.g. the liver, heart & kidney)

PORTRAIT – Michelle Obama, into the hands of the 1st African-American ‘First Lacy’!

What are the major hand characteristics of the 1st Afro-American ‘First Lady’? Just like her husband, Michelle Obama has a ‘low 2D:4D digit ratio’. But unlike Barack Obama, she has a double ‘head line’ – in medical science a.k.a. the distal transverse crease.

Michelle Obama’s ‘digit ratio’ appears to be close to 0.94, which is rather low – even for an African-American woman.

NOTICE: The average ‘ digit ratio ‘ for women is close to 0.98, but in Afro-Americans the average ‘digit ratio’ is slightly lower – likely close to 0.96.

A typical female-like characteristic is her short pinky finger, which has been associated with ‘higher emotional sensitivity’ – a high score on the Big Five dimension Neuroticism (which is associated with persons who are easily upset in the face of very minor stresses; a person with high neuroticism gets easily: anxious, worried, moody & unstable).

But her ‘low digit ratio’ indicates that she does put this ‘higher emotional sensitivity’ into action, which might explain why during the presidential campaign media have tried to label her as an “angry black woman“.

Nevertheless, it appears that her populatity has not suffered on her husband’s  Presidential Approval Index rating of -20.

According the ‘The Encyclopedia of Palmistry‘ a ‘double head line’ has been associated with versatility and a great command of language & determination. But it could also point to having ‘two persona’. So maybe the ’double head line’ provides a clue why the current ‘First Lady’ was able to turn her career  as a layer into a fashion icon and role model for women, and a notable advocate for poverty awareness and healthy eating.

A ‘family tree’ of the palmar lines!

In 2004 Chinese researchers present a new approach to study the hand lines for biometric purposes. They applied a mathematical model on hand prints and were able to identify six types of  palmar crease variations – based on the core characteristics of the three ‘major palmar lines’. Recently, in line with the Chinese research a new more advanced (PIC) model was introduced which e.g. describes 21 types of major hand line variations which are displayed in ‘a family tree of the major hand line types’: see the picture above.

Interestingly, the new study reports e.g. about a correlation between the palmar lines and intelligence (IQ): left hand vs. right hand asymmetries appear to be involved, plus a lower prevalence of MPA’s – such as the simian line & Sydney line).

– THE BASICS OF MEDICAL HAND ANALYSIS – [tweetmeme source=”handresearch” only_single=false] Dyshidrotic eczema is a chronic relapsing form of vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis of unknown etiology. Although the etiology is unclear, there is a strong association with atopy. Fifty percent of patients with dyshidrotic eczema will also have atopic dermatitis. Exogenous factors, especially metals (such as nickel), may trigger episodes. Patients typically report pruritus of the hands and feet with a sudden onset of vesicles. On examination, patients will have symmetric crops of clear vesicles and/or bullae on the palms as well as lateral aspects of the fingers and toes, feet, and soles (shown). The distribution of lesions is 80% hands only, 10% feet only, and 10% feet and hands. Lichen simplex chronicus is a thickening of the skin with variable scaling that arises secondary to repetitive scratching or rubbing. It is not a primary process, but develops when patients sense pruritus, repetitively excoriate the area, and develop lichenification. The etiology of the pruritus may be due to any underlying pathology, or none at all. Patients typically report stable pruritic plaques, most commonly on the scalp, nape of the neck, extensor forearms, elbows, vulva, scrotum, upper medial thighs, knees, lower legs, and ankles. Erythema is found in early lesions. The plaques are typically well demarcated, lichenified, firm, and rough with exaggerated skin lines. Hyperpigmentation may be present. Treatment is aimed at reducing pruritus with topical corticosteroids or oral antihistamines. In some patients, antianxiety medications are require. Irritant contact dermatitis is a nonspecific response of the skin to direct chemical damage. It is the clinical result of inflammation arising from the release of proinflammatory cytokines from skin cells, principally keratinocytes. The major pathophysiologic changes are skin-barrier disruption, epidermal cellular changes, and cytokine release. Although a wide range of chemicals may be responsible, the most common causes are repeated exposure to low-grade irritants, such as soaps and detergents. Acute irritant contact dermatitis may develop within minutes to hours of exposure, whereas the cumulative form may be delayed by weeks. On examination, patients may exhibit macular erythema, hyperkeratosis, or fissuring over vesiculation with a scalded appearance of the epidermis (shown). Healing typically beings promptly after removal of the offending agent, although creams containing ceramides or dimethicone may be useful to help restore the epidermal barrier. “Your Life is in Your Hands” – Let’s talk about the hand lines!

– TRIBUTE: THE HAND LINES & PALMAR CREASES – [tweetmeme source=”handresearch” only_single=false] This week’s episode (June 1) of VoiceAmerica radioshow “Your Life is in Your Hands” was featured with the presence of UK hand analyst Lynn Seal, who talked with host Kenneth Lagerström about ‘lines of the hands’. During the hour various aspects of the hand lines were discussed, including: the mystery of the ‘palmar flexion creases’, the prenatal development of the (major) hand lines in the early life of the embryo, line variations among ethnic populations, the differences between hand lines in the left and right hand, and how the hand lines can be used for different purposes in palmistry. Lynn explained very well that in time the hand lines can show significant changes; this simple fact might explain why the validity of ‘future predictions based on the hand lines’ are even disputed from within the palmistry community! In modern palm reading (cheirology) the hand lines are not used for predicting the future; contrary the hand lines are recognized as ‘energy flows’ reflecting process in the body and the brain which related the various aspects of an indvidual, including temperament, personality & and interpersonal functioning. – HAND LINES IN THE HAND OF AN EMBRYO – Contrary to what many believe, the development of the hand lines does not directly relate to the movements of the hands. For example, the three major hand lines (life line, heart line and hand line), start developing in the hand of the little embryo in the 2nd month of gestation – while the first hand movements do not occure before the 2nd half of the third month. Another indication is provided by the fact that usually the ‘passive’ hand (= left hand for righthanded people) shows more hand lines then the ‘active hand’ (= right hand for righthanded people). And often the hands of people who are active in jobs that require a lot of manual work, show less palmar lines than those who are active in jobs that are not featured with the use of the hands (such as social work). After about 7 weeks the life line starts developing in the hand of the embryo. – WHAT DO THE HAND LINES REVEAL? – Despite the fact that many palmists around the world – especially in Asia – still claim that the lines in the palm or our hands reveal information about our future, the truth is that within the global palm reading community there appears to be a growing number of debaters who actually question the validity of this claim. While traditional palmistry has merely been a matter of using the hand as an occult ‘tool’ – focussed on making (future) ‘prediction’; in the 20th century modern palm reading became more focussed on the issue of understanding human nature, by studying the psychological- & spiritual life of individuals. The most frequently asked question is probably: “what do my hand lines reveal?” Interestinly, the answer might actually depend on the person who is faced with this question! Megan Fox has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – what are the associated hand characteristics?

Psychodiagnostic Chirology describes some typical hand characteristics that have been associated with this disorder. Do Megan’s hands confirm that she has OCD? In the in the June 2010 issue of Allure magazine (not yet published) Megan Fox describes that she suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and has problems with everyday scenarios. Megan explained, “This is a sickness, I have an illness. Every time someone uses a bathroom and they flush, all the bacteria is shot into the air.” Ms. Fox also brings her own silverware wherever she goes. “Putting my mouth where a million other mouths have been, just knowing all the bacteria that you carry in your mouth? Ucch!” Fox also claimed that she can cope without food, Megan also insisted she wouldn’t mind going for lengthy periods of time without any human contact as she prefers her own company. She said: “I could go days, weeks, without talking to another human being. I hate receiving compliments; I hate being told I’m talented or people think I’m going to be a movie star. I always feel that it’s forced and fake.” OCD & HANDS PDC analyst Arnold Holtzman has described in his book about Psychodiagnostic Chirology a list of 7 hand characteristics that appear to be associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Let’s see if Megan Fox’s hand meet those characteristics: NOTIFICATION: Holtzman described in this book very explicitly: “Each of the (7) features noted below must be in evidence for a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder to be valid.” >> 7 Hand characteristics of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: • 1 Hard & inflexible hands and the palms are never soft, nor dysplastic – No, Megan appears to have flexible hands; • 2 Pronounced knuckles – No, Megan has smooth fingers; • 3 Nail phalanges of ring- + middle finger are spatulate in shape & always heavier than the base phalanges – Yes, but Megan has only spatulate fingernails; but her ‘famous’ thumb appears to be significant here, for obviously the nail phalange of her thumb is ‘heavy’ (it’s the condition named: brachydactyly type d); • 4 Pronounced muscular tonus, including a sharp ‘thumb angle’ (see picture below) – Yes, Megan has the typical thumb angle; • 5 Back of the hands: coarse skin with a masculine texture – No, obviously Megan doesn’t have a masculine texture; • 6 Ring finger is longer than index finger – Yes, Megan’s ring finger is a bit longer than her index finger (though her finger length appears to be within the range of ‘normal’: see picture below); • 7 Palm is square shaped, and never long and narrow – Yes, Megan’s palm appears to be a bit square shaped. CONCLUSION? Megan Fox appears to have some of the typical hand characteristics that are associated with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but no more that 4 out of 7 of the OCD associated hand characteristics – which is formally not high enough to confirm Megan’s problem. Recently Barack Obama was recognized in an international poll as the most popular leader in the world of today, and this week Obama was also listed in the 2010 TIME TOP 100 as the no. 4. of world’s most influential people (in the 2009 TIME TOP 100 he was listed as no.20). Into the hands of Barack Obama – a tribute to the hands of the current US president!

The hands & handprint of the Dalai Lama – world’s 2nd most popular leader!

Paris, France: Today an international poll – covering 6,135 adults aged between 16 and 64 in Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States – revealed that the Dalai Lama is the second most popular leader in the world (Barack Obama was voted first, Hillary Clinton third). Thumbs up for the 14th Dalai Lama – a tribute to his hands.

The most remarkable characteristic in the hands of the Dalai Lama are probably the unusual starting point of his ‘apollo line’ (a.k.a. the ‘sun line’): his right hands shows 2 strong sun lines which start in the palmar zone below the heartline & pinky finger (in the ulnar side of the palm).

The Encyclopedia of Palmistry describes that the ‘apollo line’ in general is associated with creativity, brilliancy, and capability for success. And the rather unusual variant of the Dalai Lama’s sun is specified to the following life issue:

“If the line [‘apollo line’] begins from the plane or the mounts of Mars, the indications for success are from stugle and conflict. If it starts on the mounts, this will indicate that the subject’s fighting spirit plays a great part in his or her success.”

NOTICE: In this perspective it is interesting to notice that a few other Nobel Peace Price winners have this ‘nobel’ ring finger line as well, including: Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Mother Teresa & Martin Luther King – more details will be discussed in the near future!
