Curling or thickening of the hand palm combined with swelling of the fingers, making the hand look like wood with lumpy areas. It’s called PFPAS, a.k.a the ‘palmar fasciitis and polyarthritis syndrome’ (PFPAS).
What are the palmar fascia?
The palmar fascia lie under the skin on the palm of the hand and fingers. These fascia are a thin sheet of connective tissue, and the fascia separate into thin bands of tissue at the fingers. The fascia cover the tendons of the palm of the hand and holds them in place. It also prevents the fingers from bending too far backward when pressure is placed against the front of the fingers – see the picture below.
The palmar fascia:
Some statistics on ‘palmar fascial thickening’ & cancer:
“Combined with a deepening of the palmar lines this hand characteristic is since 1982 known as a signal for ovarian cancer – but it’s a very rare condition for since then about 40 cases have been reported.”
NOTICE: Problems with the palmar fascia are also often seen in “Dupuytren’s contracture” (Dupuytren’s disease).

New research from Germany points out that men with long ring fingers may more easily drive too fast, overtake on dangerous roads, and park illegally – indicated by more (self-reported) traffic violations!
Earlier research pointed out that Jamaicans are known for having long ring fingers: a rather remarkable – speculative – story about how “the world’s fastest man” got into a car accident earlier this year (luckely Usain Bolt escaped without serious injuries).
|Earlier ring finger research:
Numerous finger length studies have shown that a long ring finger compared to the index finger in men, can have a powerful effect on health & behaviour.
Quite a few studies suggest that a long ring finger is linked with: increased male aggression, outperformance in sports & (financial) risk-taking behavior.
How to measure the 2D:4D finger length ratio:
New ring finger research from Germany:
Researchers at the University of Mainz recruited 77 male drivers at an average age of 38. Each volunteer had their left hand scanned to measure the difference in length between the ring and index fingers.
They then had to provide details of all driving offences within the previous five years. Just over a third of the drivers reported having penalty points on their licences, ranging from one to 20, for offences ranging from speeding to drink driving.
The results, published in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention, showed men with longer ring fingers were more likely to have offended.
In a report on their findings the researchers said: ‘A longer ring finger than index finger was related to more traffic violations. Hormone exposure in the womb might increase traffic violations in later life.’
Jamaicans have the long ring finger, and… Usain Bolt has the long ring finger!!
Now, knowing that Usain Bolt has the long ring finger & with the German research findings in mind:

• President: 1974-1977;
This summer TIME presented a photo essay on the hands of the last 9 US presidents; US palm reader Robin Gile was asked to present his palm reading for each president. Without knowing that it was Gerald Ford’s hand, this is how Robin Gile described Ford’s hand:
“A Good, Clear Mind”
“In theory, this guy would have been a good mechanic because of the bulbous tips on his middle and ring finger,” says Gile. “He’s got a clear head line, showing a good, clear mind. His thumb is exceptionally long, showing his force of will. He’s the kind of man who thinks, ‘I know what I want, I know where I want to go.’ He’s dogged. If you go up against him, he’s just going to keep coming at you.”

Megan Fox has clubbed thumbs!
In the summer of 2009 Megan Fox’s right thumb became news after new photos of her indicated that the beauty has a rather misshapen thumb – as compared to the ‘natural’ thumb standard that is seen everywhere in the world. What do we know about this rather remarkable type of thumb?
Having your thumb in the form of a club, which is called brachydactyly – type D (BDD), which is a minor affliction that can be found in 1 out of every 1,000 people. Local hand surgeons know everything about it there is to know.
More Megan Fox thumbs: impressions of Megan’s club thumb:
Dr. Steven Bendner, the leading hand surgery expert at Beth Israel Medical Center, explains that the case of the thumb that looks a bit flattened and therefore shorter, is often a peculiarity that comes down in the family:
“The nail of the thumb in this condition is often very short and wide. It is usually hereditary, although it could also have been caused by frostbite, or it could have been an injury to the growth plate in childhood. While one is young, the thumb often looks more or less ordinary, but with the passing of time its shortened condition begins to stand out more and more.”
So, contrary to ‘fingernail clubbing‘, a clubbed thumb is usually nothing to worry about!
Dr. Richard Kim, director of congenital hand surgery at Hackensack Medical Center, warns us not to play down the importance of the thumb.:
“You need it to be able to touch the other fingers and it is important for pinching. In Megan Fox’s case, it appears that only the last bone of the thumb is affected and that it does not involve the joint. For her, it looks like it’s just a cosmetic deficit.”
Why this story about the Megan Fox thumb? Hopefully, knowing about Megan Fox’s little imperfection will help other people to realize that – when not overplayed by the owner – a small cosmetic defect might only add to the charms of a person. Now, maybe you would like to hear more about the ‘double thumb’ (in his case a combination of ‘polydactyly‘ & ‘syndactyly‘) of the famous Indian Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan???

An impression from Mars.
‘Fingerprint of God’?
Earlier this year (april) NASA reported a Chandra X-ray observatory including a ghostly blue cloud that resembled a hand with outstretched fingers grasping a ball of fire – the media were joking amused: ‘It’s the hand of God!‘. In the first week of september NASA reported another phenomenon found on planet Mars: a striking range of dunes and craters (see also the photo below) that appears to form a giant cosmic fingerprint on the surface of the Red Planet.
Scientists believe the undulating ground reveals global climate changes that took place on Mars over the past few million years.
The area is in the Coprates region, a large trough that forms part of the Valles Marineris – a system of canyons stretching thousands of miles along Mars’ equator.
The whitish areas could be evaporites – mineral sediments left behind when salt water evaporates. Such deposits would be of great interest as they indicate potential habitats for past martian life.
The detailed image is just one of thousands of pictures recently unveiled taken by Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The images were collected using a High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera during more than 1,500 telescopic observations.
Each full image from HiRISE, taken between April and August last year, covers a strip of Martian ground six kilometers (3.7 miles) wide, showing details as small as one metre, or yard, across. They are the most detailed pictures of the Red Planet’s surface taken from space.

Last month PsychoDiagnostic Chirologist Arnold Holtzman published a controversial palm reading of Barack Obama’s hands. While many other palm readers had presented their hand analysis of Barack Obama, the new hand reading from Israel induced an ‘intense’ discussion in the Global palm reader community.
What does Obama’s hand reveal?
|Ph.D. ARNOLD HOLTZMAN is the founder of the psychodiagnostic Handreading system ‘PsychoDiagnostic Chirology‘ (PDC).
This rather unusual hand reading system can be described as ‘a science of reading hands in Psychological Diagnosis’.
After the publication of his first book in 1983 ‘Applied Handreading’, Arnold Holtzman (Ph.D. in Psychology) presented in 2004: ‘The Illustrated Textbook of PsychoDiagnostic Chirology in Analysis and Therapy‘.

Michael Jackson’s famous single white hand glove – ‘click’ for the complete hand glove story!
Auction house Bonhams & Goodmans has announced that it has auctioned the first Michael Jackson item since the superstar’s death on June 25, 2009. The crystal-encrusted white glove which he had worn to the Sydney premiere of his film “Ghosts” on November 15, 1996, has sold for 57,600 dollars (49,000 US) – doubling the auctioneer’s estimate after a frenzied bidding war.
The King of Pop was in Australia for the HIStory World Tour at the time, and earlier that day he had married his second wife Debbie Rowe in Sydney.
Music journalist Peter Holmes and his friend Bill Hibble were apparently among the few audience members who laughed at the jokes in the short horror spoof and Jackson threw the glove to Hibble in thanks. Hibble has since died and his father put the glove up for sale.
The right-hand glove, made of white spandex and covered with hand-sewn clear crystals, was snapped up by the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in the United States.
Las Vegas Hard Rock curator Warwick Stone said:
“Michael Jackson gave it to someone in public in Australia and most collectors of Michael Jackson memorabilia knew about this glove. I’ve got the chain that used to hang around Sid Vicious’s neck, I’ve got one of Elvis’s .357 magnums which he used to shoot TVs with”

Lee Redmond had the world’s longest fingernails – 8.65m long [28-ft 4-in] – but lost them in a car crash earlier this year.
On a whim back in 1979, Lee Redmond decided to stop filing her nails. She intended to cut them off once they started twisting, but her plans changed. In 2002 she entered the Guinness World Records book for the world’s longest fingernails on a female pair of hands. On february 11th, 2009 Lee Redmond shocked the world with the loss of her fingernails in a car crash. Last week Guinness World Record has unveil her story after the car accident.
Fortunately, despite the loss of her record ‘long fingernails’, Lee Redmond has been doing just fine and she discovered: “There is more to life than nails!!”
In an exclusive interview with Guinness World Records she said:
“After the accident, not my children, but my great grand babies, they wanted me to glue them back on! I always did everything with them, but now it’s so much easier to do things now. The weight is so different, so much. In fact my hands seem to fly with the weight gone.”
Guinness World Records announced that they have decided to honour Lee Redmond popular finger record in the 2010 ‘The Book of the Decade’ – featured with a striking photograph of Lee pictured alongside fellow American Melvin Boothe, the male owner of the longest finger nails (9.05-m-long/29ft 8in), which was taken just a few months prior to her accident (see the photo below).
